Chinese imams forced to brandish slogan “our income comes from Chinese Communist Party not from Allah”

In another attempt to suppress religious freedoms, China forced imams from its eastern Muslim majority Xinjiang region to dance in the street and swear to an oath that they would not teach religion to children.

The imams were also forced to tell children that prayer was harmful for the soul.

The Muslim imams were further forced to brandish the slogan that “our income comes from the CKP [Chinese Communist Party] not from Allah”.

State Chinese news said the imams were gathering in a square in the name of civilization where they were forced to dance and chant out slogans in support of the state.

The slogans included statements glorifying the state over religion such as ‘peace of the country gives peace to the soul’.

Speeches were also given which directed youth to stay away from mosques and that prayer was harmful for their health. They were instead encouraged to dance.

Female teachers were instructed to teach children to stay away from religious education and made to swear an oath that they will keep children away from religion.

Uighur Muslims are a Turkish-speaking minority of eight million in the northwestern Xinjiang region.

Also known as East Turkestan, the region has been autonomous since 1955 but continues to be the subject of massive security crackdowns by Chinese authorities.

Rights groups accuse Chinese authorities of religious repression against Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang in the name of counter terrorism.

In August, the northern Xinjiang city of Karamay prohibited young men with beards and women in burqas or hijabs from boarding public buses.

Similarly, Xinjiang banned the practicing of religion in government buildings, as well as wearing clothes or logos associated with religious extremism, last November.

Last year, China banned Muslim students and government staff from observing fasts in the month of Ramadan, while encouraging locals to abstain from wearing veils.

Shocked by the outrageous incident, many took to social media to express their views.

Research: British Muslim Women 71% more Likely to Be Unemployed

Discrimination against Muslim women in the workplace means they are much more likely to be unemployed than white Christian women – even when they have the same qualifications and language skills – research showed.

British Muslim women are around 70 percent more likely to be looking unsuccessfully for work, according to the University of Bristol’s Nabil Khattab, who spoke at the British Sociological Association’s annual conference in Glasgow, The Independent reported.

The recent national Labor Force survey showed the unemployment rate among Muslim women was 18 percent, compared with 9 percent for Muslim women and 4 percent for white Christian women. This has previously been attributed to Muslim women being less well educated and less fluent in English, but Khattab says his data shows the discrepancy is also likely to be explained by employer discrimination.

Khattab analyzed a sample of 2,643 from the national Labor Force survey to compare the rates of those looking for work without success. He adjusted the sample in order to compare women with similar educational level and language abilities and controlled for marital status, children and strength of religious belief.

He found that Muslim women were 71 percent more likely than white Christian women to be unemployed, even when they had the same educational level and language skills. Muslim women were 57 percent more likely to be unemployed than white Christian women.

“Economic activity among Muslim women in the UK remains considerably lower and their unemployment rate remains significantly higher than the majority group even after controlling for qualifications and other individual characteristics,” Khattab said.

He added that the conspicuousness of Muslim women’s religious background was likely to be a key factor in explaining their exclusion. “They wear the hijab or other religious symbols which makes them more visible and as such exposed to greater discrimination.”

A mosque in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland has come under arson attack for the second time this year.

Fire broke out early Friday in the mosque in the Darling Downs region’s Toowoomba city.
Reports indicate the attack seriously damaged the mosque.
Australian police sources say an investigation has been launched into the incident. There are currently no suspects.
Police and Corrective Services Minister Jo-Ann Miller arrived in Toowoomba following the attack.

“This has been the second attack on this Islamic community in three months. It’s shocking, it’s outrageous and we want people to come forward so that the police can get the names of the perpetrators, so they can investigate it and if necessary they are charged,” Miller said.

Reports say the fire started in the mosque’s office before spreading to other parts of the building.

People coming together for a Muslim Day on Missouri Capitol

To educate people about the Islamic religion we need to be visible. That is our job and our duty to do that,” State Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad, D-Des Moines, told Des Moines Register.

”It is our job even to talk about terrorism. We have to denounce it when we see it. We have to let people know that this is not something that we promote.”

Abdul-Samad,  an imam or prayer leader, said the event is intended to combat Islamophobia.

Held on the second year, the event adds to a history of friendly relations pioneered by Gov. Terry Branstad who has annually signed an Iowa Muslim Day proclamation.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda with representatives from the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Iowa, other Islamic organizations and Muslim-owned businesses.

Branstad’s proclamation, which the governor signed last week, designates Wednesday as “Muslim Recognition Day” in Iowa.

The document states that Iowa recognizes the many individuals and families of Muslim faith who make this state their home and willingly share their rich tradition and culture with other Iowans.

The Muslim day follows the failure of House File 135 in the Iowa House which would have prevented the application of “foreign laws”.

The bill, which was co-sponsored by 13 Republican legislators, was criticized by Muslims as part of a campaign to demonize Islam and marginalize American Muslims.

“We recognize and appreciate the hard work, partnership and leadership of those dedicated lawmakers who kept this unconstitutional and discriminatory bill from passing,” Miriam Amer, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations of Iowa, said.

“Defenders of religious freedom fought a tough battle against attempts to deny Muslims and other minorities their constitutional rights.”

US Muslims, estimated at between seven to eight million, have been sensing hostility in recent months.
A recent report by CAIR, the University of California and Berkeley’s Center for Race and Gender found that Islamophobia in the US is on the rise.

A US survey had also revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Muslims and their faith.

A recent Gallup poll had found that 43 percent of Americans Nationwide admitted to feeling at least “a little” prejudice against Muslims.

Islamophobia in U.S.: Manassas Mosque vandalized in possible hate crime

111

A Prince William County mosque was vandalized Monday night or early Tuesday, and Muslim leaders described the incident as a hate crime.

Abu Nahidian, the imam at Manassas Mosque, said he arrived Tuesday morning to find an expletive written twice in spray paint on the windows of the mosque that he helped found 20 years ago. Eight windows were defaced, and a glass door was shattered.

Because the mosque has a double set of doors, the house of worship could not be entered, Nahidian said.

The mosque has been vandalized before when tensions in the United States ran high over violence in the Middle East, Nahidian said. The last previous incident was three years ago.

“We do not hurt anybody. If those with our names are doing something, why should I become the victim? You haven’t seen me doing anything,” he said. “We are a part of the whole earth, and we love the whole earth.”

A statement issued by the Council on American-Islamic Relations characterized the vandalism as a possible hate crime and asking police to investigate.

Jonathan Perok, a spokesman for Prince William County police, said officers went to the mosque Tuesday afternoon. Police said in a statement that it was not immediately clear whether the incident was a hate crime but that vandalism at any religious institution is “carefully investigated to determine the criminal intent of the suspect.”

Nahidian estimates that replacing the door and removing the paint from the windows will cost $1,000. In the meantime, 20 to 25 children who participate in the mosque’s summer classes had to walk past the obscenities to get inside Tuesday morning.
