What is the philosophy behind “Ghusl”?

shower-headOne of the obligations of Islam is Ghusl or major ablution. There are some obligatory Ghusl and some recommended ones; the obligatory Ghusl is like the Ghusl of Jinabah, the Ghusl of touching the corpse, etc.

And the recommended Ghusls are such as the Ghusl of the day of Friday, the Gusl of repentance, etc.

Now let’s talk about the philosophy behind Ghusl:

First we talk about the Ghusl of Jinabah:

It is obligatory after intercourse or ejaculation. There is a Narration from Imam Reza peace be upon him that we mention some parts of that.

The Imam said as the answer to a question regarding the philosophy of the Ghusl of Jinabah:

The reason of that is for the purification of the soul and cleanliness from its impurity and cleaning the body from the filth. Because Jinabah comes out from the whole body for this very reason it is obligatory to purify the whole body, and the reason of reduction in urine and stool is that these two cases happen so much more than Jinabah, so Islam for the multiplicity of these two cases and hardship (of Ghusl in every time) has decreed just Wudu for them.

But about the reason of Ghusls such as the Ghusl of Friday and the Ghusl of the feast of Ghorban or the feast of Fitr,  the first reason is  to glorify Allah and ask Him the repentance from the sins, and the second reason is that these days are known as  feast for the servants (of Allah) and they remember Allah in these days, so it is for the glorification of these days, and the third reason(which is related to the Ghusl of Friday) is that when a servant performs the Ghusl of Friday, he/she is pure spiritually from this day to the next Friday…

The meaning of this sentence that Jinabah comes out from the whole body is that when this state happens to a person, the effect of that appears in the whole body and makes all of the cells of the body in a numbness and this is a witness of the effect of that on the whole body, but the urine or stool is not like that and they are local.

It has been proved by the scientific researchers that the body of human has two kinds of nervous system, sympathetic and parasympathetic, the duty of the first system is to activate the activities of different systems of the body and the duty of the parasympathetic which is a system with smooth activity, is that mostly wants to save the energy. Sometimes the balance between these two systems is broken, one of these cases is at the time of orgasm, at that time the parasympathetic system surpasses the sympathetic system and this balance goes on a negative state, and it has been proved that one of the things that make the sympathetic system active, is touching with the water, and because this is affected on the whole body, we are ordered to wash the whole body, and through Ghusl, the complete balance between this two systems will be formed.

But another philosophy can be that this Ghusl is a kind of obedience of Allah and because in the orgasm, both body and soul are affected, so with Ghusl, that must be done only for the sake of Allah as the obedience to His order, both physical and spiritual sides of human get pure.

What is the philosophy behind “Helping the Oppressed”?

Help2-700x394Nowadays in some places on the earth there are cruelties done to the oppressed people, for example the people of Palestine or Lebanon or Bahrain or Libya or Yemen etc. some of these nations are not Shia, the question is why we should help them? Does Islam have any order in this regard?

When we refer to the holy Quran we see that in some verses Allah talked about the cruelty and oppression.

In chapter Nisa verse 75 we read:

“So why is it, that you do not fight in the way of Allah, and for the abased among men, women, and children who say: ‘our lord, bring us out from this village whose people are oppressors, and give to us a guardian from you, and give to us a helper from you.”

When we refer to the words of the commander of the faithful Imam Ali peace be upon him in different places, we see the emphasis of the Imam on helping the oppressed against the oppressor.

In the last moments of his life, he had some advices to his children, and among them he said:

کُونا لِلظّالِمِ خَصماً وَ لِلْمَظْلُومِ عَوناً

“Be the enemy for the oppressor and be the supporter for the oppressed.”

Another place is which the Imam is describing the reason of accepting to be the governor, he said:

“I was not the seeker of the government on you, and the thing that forces me to accept it is the covenant that Allah has taken from the Olama(scholars) of every nation, not to be silent before the gluttony of the oppressors and the hunger of the oppressed ones.”

You know that Imam Ali really was a person of justice and this is something that is accepted even by his enemies.

You know those who are oppressors and consider themselves upper than others, always are against the justice, so you see that the ones who were against the prophets of Allah and divine religions were the oppressors, because they were seeing their interests exposed to danger.

So as one of the Shia scholars by the name of Ali the son of Jad, said:

The most important thing that caused the Arab to refuse from accepting the government and caliphate of Imam Ali was the financial matters, because the Imam never preferred an Arab on non-Arab and a weighty Sharif (prominent figure) on a simple individual. And did not pay attention to the chief of the tribes more than others and did not made anyone attracted by the means of wealth, and this was exactly opposite of what Moaviyah(the name of one of the tyrant rulers) was doing.

It is narrated from the holy Prophet of Islam that he said:

“The one who hears the sound of an oppressed who calls out for asking help from Muslims, and he/she does not help that oppressed, he/she is not Muslim.”

Imam Ali peace be upon him narrated from the Prophet of Islam that the Prophet said many times:

“The nation that does not take the right of the weak from the strong clearly, it never gets pure and reaches to welfare.”

In is interesting that the holy Prophet of Islam when he was young, he was a member of groups that they made a covenant to help the oppressed, like what happened in a covenant known as “Half-Alfozul”.

And the holy Prophet said after being chosen as a prophet: I do not break my covenant even though the most precious bounties are given to me as the exchange.

The importance of helping the oppressed can be understood even through the intellect, you know that oppression is something that the human hates it by his/her innate nature and helping the oppressed is like that, and for this very reason you see that when the oppressor governments want to attack oppressed countries, they bring some excuses, for example they say that we want to help the weak people, or we do it as the support for human rights, etc.

Helping the oppressed and supporting them is something that is emphasized by the great Islamic scholars too. For example the stresses that Imam Khomeini had on helping the oppressed nations like Palestine are obvious for everyone.

Helping the poor apart from being an act which is compatible with the emotional characteristics of humankind, is a cause which enhances the brotherhood and is a way for the cooperation among people and social commitment among humankind, so any oppression to anyone, resembles oppression to others.

And as the last point, we all know that the worldly government of the twelfth Imam; Imam Mahdi peace be upon him, as it has been stated in the Narrations, is a means in which the world will be full of justice after it is filled full of cruelty.

So we ask Allah to hasten the reappearance of the twelfth Imam and help us to help the oppressed and struggle with the oppressors as a way in which we make the world prepared for that holistic just government.

What is the philosophy behind the importance of being awake in the time between morning Azan to the sunrise?

meadow-503926_640In Islam it is recommended so much to be awake between the time of morning Azan(call to prayer) and the sunrise.

It has been described in the Narrations as an hour from the hours of paradise, and many benefits and consequences have been mentioned in them for it, and as summary we can say that if someone wants the blessings of this world and the hereafter, he/she should be awake in that specific time.

It might seem for some people that there is no any difference between different times of the day, but according to the Quran, it is not so, so we see that for example midnight is a time in which the night prayer and repentance is recommended.

Another recommended time is the time which is our subject.

Allah said in the holy Quran chapter Taha verse 130:

وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا وَمِنْ آنَاء اللَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْ وَأَطْرَافَ النَّهَارِ لَعَلَّكَ تَرْضَى

“And exalt with the praise of your lord before sunrise and before sunset. And in the watches of the night and at the edges of the day, exalt him, so that you will be pleasing.”

Or in chapter Qaf verse 39, Allah said:

فَاصْبِرْ عَلَى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوبِ

“Bear then with patience what they say. Exalt with the praise of your lord before sunrise and before sunset.”

Another point which can be another base for our discussion is this point that the angels of Allah have different duties, for example some of them are assigned for the fertilization of the clouds, plants and humans, the other are assigned for division of the sustenance and livelihood, some other angels have the duty of divisions of the affairs of the people, etc.

As some Narrations describe, the divisions of the sustenance and the affairs of people by angels are done in this specific time i.e. between the morning Azan till the sunrise.

Allah said in chapter Zariyat verse 4:

فَالْمُقَسِّمَاتِ أَمْرًا

“Then by the distributors (angels), ordered.”

There is a Narration as the exegesis of this verse, that says:

“The angels divide the sustenance of human in the time between the morning Azan and sunrise, so the one who sleeps in this time; in reality he/she has slept from his/her sustenance.”

When we refer to the exegesis of the verse in chapter Ghafir verse 55 in which Allah said:

وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالْإِبْكَارِ

“And ask forgiveness of your sins, and exalt with the praise of your lord in the evening and at dawn.”

We see that the exegesis says that the meaning of the word  “ابکار” is this time.

This time is recommended for performing prayer and reciting the holy Quran.

Allah said in chapter Isra verse 78:

أَقِمِ الصَّلاَةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا

“Establish the prayer at the decline of the sun till the darkening of the night and the Quran recital at dawn. Surely, the Quran recital at dawn is witnessed.”

Imam Baqir peace be upon him in a debate with the Christian bishop said about this time:

This time is from the times of paradise, so in this time the patients get cautious and the pains get calmed and the one, who did not sleep in night, falls asleep and Allah has made this time beloved in this world for those who are eager to the hereafter.”

The same Imam said:

“Satan spreads his army in two times, the time of sunrise and the time of sunset, because these two times are the times of negligence.”

Let me briefly mention some of the benefits of being awake in this time according to the Narrations:

-The division of the sustenance.

-Escaping from calamity.

-Being safe from the financial damages and losing the capital (if we recite the Doa which is mentioned for this time)

And now let me mention briefly some of the disadvantages for sleeping in this time:

-Poverty and distress.

-Calamity.

-Blindness of heart.

-Being in need for sustenance to others.

-Negligence.

-Being a cause for yellow face.

Some people think that it is just moral prescription, but the physical benefits of being and remaining awake are something that have been proved by scientific researchers.

For example there is a hormone by the name of “Somatotropin” which in known as the hormone of growth, the time in which this hormone is produced and discharged, is during two hours after sunset, and it is recommended in the Narrations to sleep in this time.

But on the other hands there are a series of hormones that they increase stress by the name of “Corticosteroid”, the time in which these hormones are produced and discharged, is two hours before sunrise or let’s say the time about which our subject is.

If someone is asleep when the discharge of these hormones gets most, he/she is more exposed to heart attack, and also it is said by the researchers: the time in which most of deaths in dream happen, is this time.

And as the last point it must be said that the sustenance is not just financial aspects, but rather it includes spiritual aspects as well, that are so much more important than material benefits, like finding the chance to visit the holy shrines of infallibles or finding the good friends, or being the neighbor of a good family, or having the chance to have more precious lifetime with the opportunity of doing more good deeds etc.

What is the philosophy behind believing in Imamate?

89jou

We as Shia believe in the “Imamah” and Divine Leadership of the infallibles after the demise of the holy Prophet of Islam.

This Leadership began with Imam Ali, after him, his son Imam Hassan, after him, his brother Imam Hussein, till the twelfth and the last Imam, i.e. Imam Mahdi peace be upon them all.

But the Sunni brothers, believe that the holy Prophet of Islam did not specify any person as his successor, so here is a very important discussion which is related to the science of Kalam or Theology, but it must not be a cause for killing each other or struggling among Muslims and Muslims must live with each other like brothers.

At the beginning we define the meaning of the word “Imam”. Imam literally means the one who is at the front of a group and the one who leads others, this word is also used for the individuals that people perform prayer behind them in the congregational prayer or in the Friday prayer.

But in this essay we mean by Imam, the 12 infallible successors of the Prophet of Islam.

We have another word here that is related to our topic and that is “Caliph”.

In Shia school of thought the word “Caliph” is used for a leader, with the consideration to the aspects which are related to the governmental issues, but the word “Imam” is used for a leader with regard to the divine relation and connection of that leader and the direct appointment by Allah as the leader of the Muslims for their guidance.

The “Imamah” can be discussed from different aspects:

1) Its theological aspect.

From this aspect, Imamah is known as a belief in which because of being a matter that the continuation of the religions is based upon it, we believe in it.

2) Its historical aspect.

It is an important historical event that the holy Prophet of Islam appointed Imam Ali and his generations as the Imams for mankind.

3) Its political aspect.

By political we mean because Imamah is a position by which the Imam takes the affairs of the society and guides them through governing them in a just government (of course if the Imams have the chance to govern the Muslims, because most of the Imams were deprived by the cruel caliphs from their right of governing).

And we hope that our twelfth Imam i.e. Imam Mahdi will return soon, as it is mentioned in many Narrations which are narrated by both Shia and Sunni, he will come and fill the world full of justice after it is filled from injustice and cruelty. He will fight with the enemies of Islam and will overcome them and will establish a government which is based on justice and the rules of Allah the all mighty.

Let me mention some of the philosophies of Imamah now:

1) One of the benefits of Imamah is the description of the holy Quran, Allah said in the Quran in chapter Nahl, verse 44:

وَأَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

“And we sent down to you the remembrance so that you can make clear to people what has been sent down to them, in order that they reflect.”

From this verse we realize that one of the missions of the holy Prophet of Islam was to clarify the Quran, and as we know the holy Prophet of Islam has a saying which is narrated from both Shia and Sunni, he said:

“I leave among you two precious things, the book of Allah and my household, and these two never get separate from each other until they enter me on the spring of Kothar in paradise.”

So we understand that the infallibles are the real and perfect commentators of the holy Quran and they are more aware to it than anyone else.

2) Guidance of mankind.

We believe and it is accepted by all groups of Muslims that the infallibles are the most knowledgeable and the wisest people throughout the history, no one dare and can claim what the commander of the faithful Imam Ali peace be upon him claimed, he said: “ask me before you lose me, I am more aware of the ways of heavens than the ways of the earth (it means that my knowledge is not limited to any bound).

And the history bears witness that no one claimed it except he ruined himself.

So such an immaculate family of the holy Prophet of Islam is the best individuals to lead and guide people in both material and spiritual ways of perfection.

3) Another philosophy of Imamah is what we mentioned about establishing the just government.

At the end we can say that every position and duty that the holy Prophet of Islam had (except very few cases), his immaculate family have.

what is the philosophy behind the importance of “Respecting Parents” in Islam?

13930923000736_PhotoIRespecting parents is so much recommended in Islam and we are ordered to have very good treatment with them even though they are not Muslims and even though they have done so much cruelty to us, so let’s see what the reason of this rule is.

In the Quran in verses 23 -24 in chapter Isra Allah said:

“Your lord has ordered you to worship none except Him, and to be good to your parents. If either or both of them attain old age with you, do not say: “fie on you”, nor rebuke them, but speak to them with words of respect.

And lower to them the wing of humbleness out of mercy and say: ‘my lord, be merciful to them, as they raised me since I was little.”

It is interesting that in the first verse, besides ordering to worshiping only Allah, Allah said immediately: and be good to your parents.

The duties that are mentioned in the Quran about treating the parents are different, and we mention some of them:

1) Talking to them in good manners and by good words.

2) Humility before them.

3) Obeying them (except in the cases in which the orders of Allah will be disobeyed if we obey the parents).

4) Performing Doa and asking Allah for them.

Imam Kazem peace be upon him has narrated that the holy Prophet was asked about the right of father upon the child and he replied:

The child must not call the parents by their names and must not walk and sit before them and ahead them and must not cause them to be insulted.

In a Narration from Imam Sajjad peace be upon him, he said about the right of mother:

The right of mother upon you is that you know that she carried you in a place in which no one carries other, and gave you from the fruit of her heart; the thing that no one gives it to other, and she protected you by all her lambs and she did not give importance to herself of being hungry while you are full, and did not give importance to herself of being thirsty while she makes you drink(milk or water) And to be without covering while you are covered and did not take care about herself to be under sunshine, while you are in shadow, and to remain awake and protect you from heat and coldness in order to have you and not miss you, so you cannot thank her except by the help and chance of Allah.”

The reasons that we are ordered to be kind to them can be as followings:

Firstly, this rule in because of so much attempts that they did for us.

Secondly, it is for their position as the teacher and educator for us.

So now is the time to look at some of the benefits and consequences of respecting parents and being good to them which are derived from Narrations:

1) The benefits which appear in this world like:

-It causes the death to be easy.

-It prolongs the lifetime.

-The person who respects them, he/she does not get stuck in poverty.

-if we respect them as it is mentioned in Narrations, our children will learn it from us and will treat us well.

2) The benefits which appear after death and in the hereafter, like:

-Achieving to the satisfaction and pleasance of Allah.

-Preventing from entering the fire of Hell.

-Being among the inhabitants of paradise beside the prophets.

-Being under the shadow of the throne of Allah which can be meant: being included in the mercy of Allah.

Now let me mention some of the harms of disrespecting the parents, according to the Narrations, like:

-Not being included in the forgiveness of Allah.

-Preventing from entering the paradise and even feeling the smell of it.

-Preventing the prayers from being accepted.

And as the last point, there is a Narration from the Prophet of Islam in which he said:

There are three groups that their punishment happens soon and is not delayed to the hereafter… one of them is the punishment of disrespecting the parents and being disowned by them.

What is the philosophy behind the importance of “Rights of people” in Islam?

Rights-of-peopleThere are two kinds of right in Islam, one is related to the Lord and is called the right of Allah, and the second is the right of people or “حق الناس” .

If we do not perform our daily prayers, we transgress the right of Allah and we owe to Him only, but if we usurp the land of someone, beside the sin that we commit which is the transgression of the right of Allah, we did not observe the right of people.

There are some differences between these two kinds of right.

But in short according to the Islamic sources, the right of people is so much dangerous, because it is possible that Allah due to His forgiveness and generosity, will forgive His own right, but the right of people cannot be forgiven except through satisfying them, and if we do not satisfy them in this world, it will lead to a very hard compensation on the day of judgment.

The holy Prophet of Allah said:

“The blood, property and reputation of every believer is Haram and respectable on other believer.”

The holy Prophet said:

“The property of a believer is respected just like his/her blood is respected.”

When we refer to the Narrations, we realize that if we do not satisfy those whose rights are transgressed by us, beside the hard difficulties on the day of judgment, the consequences of transgression of the rights of others, cause some problems for us even in this world.

For example if we use from properties of others without their satisfaction it leads to rejection of our worships and not being accepted, the corruption of us and our children etc.

Imam Sadiq peace be upon him said:

A believer is more respected than Kaba(the house of Allah in Mecca).

Who dares to destroy the house of Allah? So why we destroy something which its honor is more than Kaba so easily through backbiting, accusation, insulting, etc.?

Imam Baqir peace be upon him said:

There are three kinds of cruelty, the cruelty which Allah forgives it, the cruelty which Allah does not forgive it and the cruelty that Allah does not leave it. The cruelty that Allah does not forgive it, is Shirk (believing in others beside Allah as God), and the cruelty that Allah forgives it, is the cruelty and sin that a human commits and it is a matter between him/her and Allah, and the cruelty that Allah does not leave it, is the debt that is among servants (people).

It is interesting that the longest verse in the holy Quran which is in chapter Bagharah, talks about the rights of others by mentioning the ways that theses right will not get transgressed.

Another important point about the rights of others is that there is no any difference between a children and an adult, for example even if an adult usurps the property of a child, he/she is responsible toward that property and even it might has more punishment, because the child cannot defend from him/herself.

From the other side, for example if a child eats from the fruit of a garden of someone, that child is responsible and must satisfy the owner of that fruit and if the child did not do it, must do it when he/she reach to the age of maturity.

One of the consequences of the transgressions of the rights of others is that the blessings get away from the life of the committer.

Another consequence of such great sins is that the enjoyment form worshiping is taken from the committer.

And another effect of not observing the rights of others is that their Doa and wishes do not get fulfilled.

Imam Sadiq peace be upon him said:

The one who wants his Doa to be fulfilled quickly, he must purify his job (by observing the rules of religion and the rights of others).

And as the last point let me mention very shocking Narration from the Prophet of Islam, he said:

The most wretched person is the one that enters in the desert of doom(on the day of judgment) with good deeds like prayer and Hajj but when he/she wants to enter the paradise, a group of people prevent him/her, when that person asks the reason, they reply that our rights were transgressed by you, and they ask the angels for help, and the angels say: satisfy them, give from your good deeds to them in order to get satisfied with you, and when that person , does so, he/she realizes that there is not any good deeds remained, so his/her books of deeds is given to his/her left hand that is a symbol of being among the inhabitants of Hell.

What is the philosophy behind observing “Taqwa” and God-fearing?

In Islam we have been ordered to observe “Taqwa” or piety.

If we want to describe this word in brief we say:

Taqwa means to fear Allah and to feel the presence of Allah in all situations and under all circumstances.

If someone is familiar with the teachings of Islam, he/she definitely realizes that the base of all perfections in Islam is Taqwa.

There are hundreds of verses of the holy Quran in which the concept of Taqwa is used.

According to the second verse of chapter Bagharah, the Quran describes itself as guidance for the pious people, which means the real and complete guidance of the Quran is obtained through Taqwa.

If someone wants to be more respected to Allah than others, he/she must be pious, because Allah said in chapter Hojorat verse 13:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

“People, we have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you might know one another. The noblest of you before Allah is the most righteous of you. Allah is the knower, the aware”.

From this verse we understand that there is no any priority of any one over others, except through Taqwa, and no one can say that because for example I am from that great tribe, so I’m better than the other.

Through Taqwa we can reach to a powerful sight that makes us able to distinguish right from wrong. Allah said in chapter Anfal, verse 29:

يِا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إَن تَتَّقُواْ اللّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا وَيُكَفِّرْ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ وَاللّهُ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ

“Believers, if you fear Allah, He will give you a criteria and cleanse you of your sins and forgive you, Allah is the owner of great bounty”.

Taqwa has different levels; the Islamic scholars in the field of morality have divided it into three levels:

-The level which is obtained through obeying obligations and prohibitions.

-The level that apart from performing the duties of the first level, can be reached through performing recommended acts and avoiding from Makruh(the acts which are not Haram and prohibited, but it is better to be left).

-The level that beside the deeds of the first and second levels can be achieved through making the heart only for the inhabitance of Allah and not letting others to enter in it.

Of course we must not force ourselves to reach to the third level in one night, because by this intention, in many cases we will make ourselves reluctant to worship of Allah and religion.

Another benefit of Taqwa is that through it, we can get rid of difficulties like satanic temptations. Allah said in chapter Talaq verses 2-3:

مَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا

وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ

“Whosoever fears Allah, He will appoint for him a way out.

And provide for him from where he does not expect”.

Another benefits that we can obtain through Taqwa which is understood from the above verse, is that the sustenance in both physical and spiritual meanings is achieved through Taqwa, the meaning of physical sustenance is clear, and the spiritual “Rezq” and sustenance can be manifested in different ways, like getting familiar with a prominent teacher in the field of morality, or finding a righteous friends or finding the chance for visiting the shrines of the infallibles etc. and for such a person who observes Taqwa, the next step of perfection gets clear.

According to the Quran, if someone wants to be beloved by Allah and wants to have good ending in the life, he/she must observe Taqwa.

If the servant of Allah does not observe Taqwa, his/her good deeds might not have its perfect effect, and it is like a patient, that does not restrain from eating the harmful meals, so even such a person, uses the best medical treatments, but because of not leaving the harmful food, the medicine has not its complete effect.

The holy Prophet of Islam said:

“Verily if you perform prayer so much to the extent that you become like the bow and if you fast so much to the extent that you become like the bowstring, these acts are not beneficial for you, except if you observe Taqwa.”

Molavi the great poet has composed an interesting poem related to our subject.

He said:

We try to fill the store full of wheat, and as much as we fill the store, we lose the wheat, because we are not aware that this store has mice that they eat the wheat.

So if we try to perform Mostahab and recommended acts, but do not abstain from committing the prohibited acts i.e. sins, these good deeds are not so beneficial for us.

What is the philosophy behind the importance of “Ziyarah” and visiting the Shrine of Imam Hussein(A.S)?

940fe7e00e82cfe45f8474e19ea7286bOne of the most recommended acts in Islam is Ziyarah and visiting the holy shrine of Imam Hussein peace be upon him in the city of Karbala in Iraq.

The importance of this holy shrine is to the extent that Imam Sadiq peace be upon him said:

“The one who dies and did not visit the shrine of Imam Hussein, his/her religion and faith is incomplete and his/her level in paradise(if will be among the inhabitants of Paradise) will be the lowest level of the levels of believers.”

And there is another Narration that says: The one who did not visit the shrine of Imam Hussein, if he/she will be from those who enter paradise, he/she will be the guess of the inhabitants of the paradise.(it means that he/she will not have independent house there.)

You might know that throughout the history of Islam, in many times, this visiting was being done in a kind of dangerous situation, for example it is narrated in the history that in a time of one of the tyrant rulers of Abbasite the Shia who wanted to visit the shrine of Imam Hussein, they had to let the armies of that tyrant government to cut their hand, but the Shia despite of this condition, were visiting the holy shrine and it happens sometimes that the some Shias were losing both hand in the way of visiting Imam Hussein and it shows the deep love of the believers toward this holy Imam.

It is narrated from the holy Prophet of Islam who said:

“There is a heat in the hearts of the believers because of the martyrdom of Hussein which never gets cold.”

One of the companions of Imam Baqir peace be upon him said:

I asked the Imam: what is your idea about the one who visits the graves of your fathers and ancestors while having fear from your enemies? And the Imam replied:

“Allah will secure him/her from the punishment of the day of judgment and the angels give tidy to him/her and say: do not be afraid and sad, today is the day in which you will be prosperous.”

So we only pointed to very few from the various Narrations in this regard.

No we want to see what are the philosophies and benefits and rewards of this very blessing visiting.

Imam Sadiq peace be upon him said:

“Allah has some angels which are appointed on the grave of Imam Hussein, when a visitor of the shrine of Imam Hussein decides to go for visiting, Allah forgives his/her sins and when the visitor starts his/her journey, Allah removes his/her sin, and when the visitor takes step, Allah will double His/her rewards to the extent that he/she reach to a level by which paradise gets obligatory for this visitor.”

Of course we must try to keep what we have obtained through good deeds like visiting of the shrine of infallibles safe and not let the sins to reduce or remove it and if we commit a sin, very soon compensate that through Tobah and repentance.

There is a Narration which says:

“On the day of judgment, a herald calls out: where are the visitors of the grave of Imam Hussein? So some people stand, and then these visitors are told: take the hand of everyone you like and make him/her enter Paradise.”

There is another interesting Narration which is narrated from Imam Sadiq peace be upon him that he said: a herald on the day of judgment calls out: where are the visitors of Imam Hussein? Then some people stand that no one other than Allah knows their number, and then these visitors are asked: what made you visit Imam Hussein? And they replied: O’ Allah, the love that we had toward the Prophet and Imam Ali and Lady Fatimah and because of the cruelties which were done to them.

Then they are told: these are Prophet Mohammad, Imam Ali and Lady Fatimah and Imam Hasan and Imam Hussein, join them, you are in their level, and join beside the flag of Prophet of Allah, the flag which is in the hand of Imam Ali.”

A question may occur in some people’s mind and that is how can it be true that for a visiting, we reach to all of these bounties as rewards which are mentioned through many various Narrations?

We answer: because Imam Hussein gave everything that he had in the way of Allah, for example he sacrificed himself, his young son, his six months baby, his family got captive and they tolerated so much tortures and many others tragic events of Karbala, so it is very logical to say Allah reacts everything that He has for the sake of Imam Hussein and his visitors and those who cry for Imam Hussein or those who make others cry for him or those who hold ceremonies for him etc.

And through visiting Imam Hussein’s shrine, the goal of Imam Hussein from his revolution and his message can remain safe and alive; the goal which is in fact the goal of Allah from the creation of everything, and that is the guidance of mankind.

What is the philosophy behind the importance of “Seeking Knowledge” in Islam?

Seeking-KnowledgeSeeking knowledge is so much recommended in Islam.

It is something which is innate the nature of human that he/she wants to have knowledge and know about different things.

Knowing the self and knowing about the world around us is a kind of knowledge that human wants to have.

The holy Prophet of Islam said:

“When Allah wants (to give) good to someone, He make that person a deep knowledgeable in religion.”

It is narrated from the Prophet that he said:

“An Alim(knowledgeable) person is higher than a Abid(worshiper) seventy levels.”

The holy Quran explicitly describes one of the missions of the holy Prophet of Islam to give knowledge to the people.

Allah said in chapter Jom’a verse 2:

هُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا مِن قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ

“It is He who has risen among the illiterate (Arabs), a messenger from themselves, to recite to them his verses, to purify them, and to teach them the book and the wisdom, though before that they were in clear error”.

Imagine you want to walk in night in a dark desert, you definitely need light, knowledge looks like the light in the darkness of different mistakes and wrongs and sins that we might commit, when we have light, we can look at our ahead and prevent ourselves from making mistakes, mistakes that sometimes need several years to compensate them, and as much as our light is more, our guidance is more and our making mistake gets less.

And it is interesting that in some Narrations, knowledge is called “Noor” which means light.

Having knowledge is so much important to the extent that Allah said in chapter Mojadalah verse 11:

يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ

“Allah will raise up in ranks those who believed among you and those who have been given knowledge.”

If someone has Ma’refah and knowledge of Allah, such a person, knows his/her Lord better and the worship that such a person performs, is more worthy than a simple worship.

If someone wants to have a right and correct movement in every field, definitely he/she needs knowledge.

Imam Ali peace be upon him said to one of his companions:

“There is no any movement except you need knowledge in it.”

Let me mention briefly some positions of knowledge which are mentioned in some Narrations, like:

-It is as a guide.

-It is as greatness and ignorance is as going astray.

-It is a great treasure which does not finish.

-It is as a resuscitator of the soul and enlightener of the intellect and remover of the ignorance.

-It obtains “life” for human.

It is very appropriate to define the meaning of knowledge here, because you know that the meaning of knowledge might be somehow different, but the common meaning in all schools of thought is to know something which you did not know it before.

In Islam “Ilm” (knowledge) means something that has the aspect of monotheism.

But it must be said that Islam is not against the technology and the developed sciences, and it has its own value especially when it is obtained for the sake of Allah for helping His creatures, but some of the usages of the knowledge and “Ilm” which are used in Islamic sources, mean its divine meaning, and for this reason, we see that Allah said in chapter Fatir verse 28:

إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاء

“It is only those amongst His worshippers that fear Allah who have knowledge.”

And as the last point let me mention that the knowledge without acting according to that, is not so precious and in some cases it brings more responsibilities and more punishment on the day of judgment, and it is completely logical, because imagine two persons, one is aware of the commands of the boss, and the second is not aware, if both of them disobey their boss, which one causes more sadness for the boss? The one who was not aware, can bring the excuse of not being aware of the order of the boss, but such an excuse is not accepted from the aware person.

But if a person has knowledge and applies it in his/her life, he/she is among the best persons in the world.

What is the philosophy behind the importance of “Zohd” or reluctance to the world?

“Zohd” in literal means reluctance and in our discussion, means to be reluctant to the material world.

There are a close relation between Zohd and piety.

This word is sometime misunderstood by some people, they think that if we say that one of the moral characteristics of human is to be reluctant to the worldly attraction, we mean that a believer must leave in the desert or in a wreckage and must eat nothing other than dry bread, etc. but this word is translated in the moral books: not to be attached to the world in a way that makes human away from religious duties and paying attention to Allah and prevents human from helping the poor etc.

There is a deep difference between Islamic Zohd and monasticism, in Islam if we want to have Zohd, it does not mean to escape from the family and social responsibilities.

Islam does not wants its nation to be weak and out of date and always be in need of others, so leaving the world in its wrong meaning is not what Islam wants.

It can be understood from the saying of Imam Ali peace be upon him that Zohd is summarized in these two sentences in the holy Quran, chapter Hadid verse 23:

لِكَيْلَا تَأْسَوْا عَلَى مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا تَفْرَحُوا بِمَا آتَاكُمْ

“So that you will not be saddened for whatever does not come to you, nor be overjoyed in what has come to you.”

Of course the meaning of this verse is not to leave the world in a way that you never think of future or take lessen from the past.

Zohd can be defined in these words too:

-Leaving freely in this world and not getting stuck and hunted by it.

-Not having the very long wishes and being thankful while having bounties.

-Not looking at the material world as the last and ultimate goal and destination.

No let’s talk about the role of Zohd in the perfection of mankind.

The one, who is a little familiar to the spiritual perfection, knows that till human does not get free from the chain and limitation of selfish desires, he/she cannot be successful in spiritual matters.

The real meaning of worshiping Allah is to prefer His wills on our wills and if we get so much attracted by what our wishes order us to obtain, we cannot reach to that level of worship.

Let’s look at the life of Imam Ali peace be upon him, his Zohd is admitted by his enemies, imagine if he was a fun-oriented man and a man who always looks after his own wishes and pleasure, can he be in that very high position?

Yes, it is narrated from the life of the holy Prophet or Imam Ali peace be upon them, that for example Imam Ali was eating the dry bread and salt, but the Imam said: that I eat in this way because I am the governor of the society and I want to be in the lowest level of the society members in order that the poor do not feel so much difficulty in their life.

If the human has Zohd, he/she has more consideration while worshiping Allah.

The one who has Zohd, is very tranquil, because the one that always looks at the properties of others, always wants to have the same properties and it might happen that for obtaining them, he/she uses every way, even through committing the sins and usurping and many cruelties, but imagine the one who is reluctant to the attractions of the world, what a tranquil heart he/she has.

The holy Prophet of Allah narrated a divine Narration in which Allah said:

“My best and most beneficial of my friends to me is a man who is carefree who enjoys from his prayer and worships his lord well and is unknown among people and the livelihood reaches to him in convenience and to the extent of being enough (lowest amount) and he is patient on it and at the time of death, his heritage is little and his weepers are few.”

And at the end I mention some of the benefits and effects of Zohd which have been mentioned in a Narration form Imam Sadiq peace be upon him, he said:

“The one who has Zohd in the world, these things happen to him/her:

-Allah puts wisdom in his/her heart.

-And makes his/her tongue to talk out of wisdom.

-And shows him/her the defects of the world and the illnesses and the medication of it.

-And makes him/her come out from this world healthy to the adobe of eternity.”

From this Narration we understand that the material attractions of this world are like veils and as much as we are away from it, our eyes find more sight to the extent that the reality of this world becomes obvious for us.
