Al Wefaq expresses concern over detainees on hunger-strike

Al Wefaq National Islamic Society expressed deep concern over reports of detainees going on hunger strike to protest ill-treatment and poor conditions in the Dry Dock prison. The situation of tens of detainees in the prison is worrying, reports from inside the prison said the prison’s clinic has become overcrowded after many of the hunger-strikers fell unconscious and left without treatment, some in worrying conditions.

Al Wefaq is gravely concerned about reports of detainees being threatened by command-officers and officials. Things could worsen if the prison’s administration remains stiff towards the detainees’ humanitarian demands.

The regime in Bahrain, and specifically the Interior Ministry, is fully responsible for the deteriorating conditions in the Dry Dock prison. Denial to humanitarian rights and medical care indicates a desire to retaliate from the prisoners and worsen the situation. The regime takes responsibility for the safety of the detainees due to the abuses practiced by its officials.
