Extremist settlers wearing priestly garments storm al-Aqsa mosque

Ahlul Bayt News Agency – Dozens of Israeli settlers wearing priestly garments stormed Wednesday morning al-Aqsa Mosque to celebrate what they call the day of Atonement, QPress said.

QPress center pointed out that Israeli authorities opened al-Magaribeh Gate for settlers’ access on the Day of Atonement that coincides with Muslims’ Day of Arafah which is considered the most sacred day of Hajj during which pilgrims head to Mount Arafah in Makkah and stay there until sunset.

The Palestinian Awqaf (Endowment) Authority has earlier demanded that no settlers be allowed into al-Aqsa on the Day of Arafah; however, Israeli forces denied Muslim worshipers’ the right to enter into their holy shrine while allowing the settlers in.

Earlier Tuesday, Israeli forces imposed tight restrictions in occupied Jerusalem and its Old City on the eve of the Day of Atonement where they deployed in large numbers across the city and at the entrances to al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli restrictions severely restricted Palestinian access to the Mosque compound.

Israel deployed thousands of its police forces throughout the city and shut it off from the West Bank, with checkpoints closed for Jewish holidays.

France urges Saudi Arabia to cancel execution of Sheikh Nimr’s nephew

France has expressed concern over the fate of a young Saudi man sentenced to death over his alleged role in anti-regime protests in the kingdom, urging Riyadh to cancel his execution.

“France is concerned by the situation of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr, who was sentenced to death even though he was a minor at the time of the events,” French Foreign Ministry spokesman, Romain Nadal, said in a statement released on Wednesday, adding, “Opposed to the death penalty in all cases and circumstances, we call for the execution to be called off.”

The youth is the nephew of prominent Saudi Shia cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, who has been sentenced to death on charges of disturbing state security, making anti-government speeches, and defending political prisoners.

The statement came one day after a group of human rights experts affiliated with the United Nations called on the Al Saud regime to halt Nimr’s “imminent execution.”

The rights experts argued that the Saudi teenager did not receive a “fair trial” while his lawyer did not have access to the case file.

Nimr was arrested during an anti-government protest in the Qatif region, Eastern Province, back in 2012 when he was only 17 years old. He was later convicted of alleged criminal activities and handed down a death penalty by Saudi Arabia’s Specialized Criminal Court in May 2015.

Dr Morrow’s Genocide Initiative against Wahhabism is gaining traction in the US

Dr John Morrow and his team’s efforts have dramatically changed America’s political landscape now that a Congressman has petitioned the House of Congress, hoping to see recognize ISIS’ crimes as acts of genocide against Islam, Christianity and all religious minorities.

Earlier this September US Congressman, Jeff Fortenberry, a Republican introduced Resolution 75 to Congress on September 9, 2015 ahead of the Pope’s scheduled visit to the Washington.

The resolution reads as follow:

• the atrocities committed against Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities targeted specifically for religious reasons are crimes against humanity and genocide;

•each of the Contracting Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and other international agreements forbidding war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly the governments of countries and their nationals who are in any way supporting these crimes, are reminded of their legal obligations under the Convention and these international agreements;

•the United Nations (U.N.) and the Secretary-General are called upon to assert leadership by calling the atrocities war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide;

•the member states of the U.N., with an appeal to the Arab States that wish to uphold religious freedom and justice, should collaborate on measures to prevent further war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, and collaborate on the establishment of tribunals to punish those responsible for the ongoing crimes;

•the governments of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Lebanese Republic, and other countries are commended for having undertaken to shelter and protect those fleeing extremist violence; and

•those who force the migration of religious communities from their ancestral homelands, including specifically the Nineveh Plain and Mount Sinjar, should be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the place where their crimes were committed and under applicable international criminal statutes and conventions.

Dr Morrow’s determination to expose Wahhabi-inspired radicalism has been welcomed by rights groups across the globe. Gregory Stanton of Genocide Watch recently said he was delighted of the progress the Genocide Initiative made on the ground in terms of raising awareness against ISIS.

Genocide Watch has been working with Chaldean Christians on precisely the same issue as the Genocide Initiative (headed by Dr Morrow) : having the actions of ISIS officially declared “genocide”.

Following is that Gregory Stanton from Genocide Watch, had to say on ISIS’ crimes:

“Members of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, representing the world’s largest organization of experts on genocide, have called upon the United States Congress to declare that the crimes committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) also known as Daesh, constitute genocide in violation of the International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Genocide is the intentional destruction, in whole or in part, of a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group, as such.

ISIS is committing genocide against religious groups that do not conform to ISIS’s totalitarian definition of ‘true Islam.’ ISIS’s mass murders of Chaldean, Assyrian, Melkite Greek, and Coptic Christians, Yazidis, Shia Muslims, Sunni Kurds and other religious groups meet even the strictest definition of genocide.

ISIS’s policy of mass rape is also genocidal. The gendered pattern of persecution pursued by ISIS against groups it considers to be infidels conforms to historical patterns of genocide, particularly the mass killing of men and teenage boys accompanied by the rape and enslavement of women and teenage girls and the kidnapping of children.

ISIS government in areas it has occupied includes beheadings of captives and people considered apostates, destruction of religious centers such as churches and monasteries, and pillage of ancient cultural sites that do not conform to the regime’s religious orthodoxy—acts typical of genocidal regimes. ISIS rules by totalitarian terror. ISIS leaders, many of them from Saddam Hussein’s sadistic regime, have read Stalin’s writings on how to use terror to rule populations through fear. That is why ISIS beheads its captives, and then posts videos of the beheadings on the internet.

ISIS must be defeated militarily to destroy the illusion of invincibility its terrorism has created. It is incredible that American airstrikes have left Raqqa and dozens of ISIS training camps standing. Are American and NATO Air Forces incompetent? ISIS must also be defeated ideologically. This is a spiritual war, very similar to the Cold War against Communism. Muslim nations must reclaim Islam from the satanic preaching of ISIS. The imaginary ISIS caliphate is like the Khmer Rouge attempt to recreate the imaginary 11th century Angkor Empire.

What difference would it make to call the crimes of ISIS “genocide?” Studies by genocide scholars have shown that calling genocide by its proper name, rather than using euphemisms like “ethnic cleansing” or weaker terms like “crimes against humanity,” increases the probability of forceful action to end the crimes by over four times. The most relevant case was Kosovo, where US War Crimes Ambassador Scheffer’s determination that the crimes were genocidal massacres led nearly directly to the bombing of Belgrade and a rapid end of the conflict.

One way to undermine the ideological attraction of ISIS is indictment of ISIS leaders by the International Criminal Court (ICC.) Because Syria and Iraq are not state-parties to the ICC, only the UN Security Council can refer ISIS to the ICC. Russia and China might not block such referral since they have radical Muslims of their own to deal with. The UN Security Council should refer ISIS to the ICC for investigation and prosecution. The Arab League, Turkey, NATO, and national police forces should act swiftly and firmly to arrest ISIS leaders. ISIS must be stopped and brought to justice.”

Putin opens reconstructed Central Mosque in Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened on Wednesday Moscow’s Central Mosque on the eve of Eid Al-Adha, after a decade of reconstruction works. It is regarded as the largest mosque in Russia and Europe.

Turkish President Recep Erdogan, Palestine’s leader Mahmoud Abbas and several Arab and Muslim officials and diplomats attended the opening ceremony upon an invitation by Putin.

The historic mosque was built in 1904, then renovated in 2005. Later it was demolished in 2011, during which it was one of four mosques in Moscow.

The decision to demolish the mosque was taken after the Russian authorities came to the conclusion that a total reconstruction was necessary because the old building had partially caved due to heavy rain and was no longer safe.

Another reason the authorities have given was that the mosque was deviated by several degrees from Qibla, the direction toward the Holy Kaaba in Makkah.

Despite the authority’s justification, the demolishing of the historical mosque was widely denounced by several organizations and Muslim leaders. It was also met with a huge backlash from the Muslim community.
This was mainly because of the date Russia set for the demolishing works, which was on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Council of Muftis Rushan Abbyasov said that the mosque now has six floors that cover a space of 19,000 square meters, and that it is expected to accommodate more than 10,000 worshippers. The mosque is currently the largest in Russia.

The reconstruction of the mosque costs $170 million, of which the Russian businessman and senator Suleyman Kerimov had donated around $100 million to the project in memory of his father. The list of donors also included Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas who donated $26,000 and Turkey which donated a minbar (pulpit from which the imam delivers Friday’s sermon) and a mihrab (a semicircular niche that points to Makkah, and the place where the imam prays at).

The walls and ceilings of the mosque have traditional Russian ornamental inscriptions, which were carved by Turkish artisans, and the dome and pavilions are covered with 12 kg of gold leaf.

Russia plans to build several new mosques to keep up with the significant growth of the Muslim population.
Russia is the home to 23 million Muslims and Islam is the second largest religion. Muslims account for 17 percent of the total population, coming next to Christianity who makes up 46.8 percent.

Ayatollah Alavi Gorgani: Wilayah is God’s greatest blessing for humanity

Ayatollah Alavi Gorgani in a meeting with heads of police stated: “The blessing of Wilayah is God’s greatest blessing for humanity and we must know its value.”

“The most important right that all human beings were granted is Wilayah; the Wilayah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad and his pure progeny is the most valuable right that God has given us, therefore we must know its value and take pride in it,” Ayatollah Gorgani said in reference to divinely appointed authority (Wilayah).

Addressing the police officials, Ayatollah Gorgani quoted verses from the Holy Quran dealing with the issue of Judgement Day, stating that if these verses were studied properly and reflected upon, each verse would be enough for us to reach our worldly and other-wordly goals.

“Unfortunately it is quite possible that many Muslims have read the Quran numerous times throughout their lives, however it is rare that they ponder and reflect on these verses, and this will undoubtedly cause a dilemma for Muslims,” he added.

Ayatollah Gorgani also stated: “God, The Holy Prophet Muhammad, his pure progeny and the saints are witnesses to the deeds of all humans; and we must all live in a way that on the day of judgement we do not feel ashamed in their presence.”

“That God places fear of punishment in his creation is because of the immense love He has for them, as He does not wish to see them taking the wrong path;” he continued.

President Rouhani felicitates Eid al-Adha to Muslim presidents

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in separate messages congratulated leaders of the Muslim world on the advent of Eid Al-Adha (Muslim Feast of Sacrifice, marking the end of the Hajj season), and hoped for effective efforts to control violence and extremism in the world.

In his messages on Wednesday, the Iranian president extended his congratulations to the Muslim states and nations as well as his counterparts in Islamic countries.

The messages underlined that human beings need tranquility and peace, and expressed the hope that the Islamic countries would be able to control bloodshed, violence and extremism and establish security through sympathy, brotherhood and friendship.

President Rouhani also wished good health and success for all Muslim governments and nations.

Iranians celebrate the Eid al-Adha, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son for God, on Thursday.

The Muslim eve is celebrated according to a lunar calendar, and thus, some of other Muslim states, celebrated the occasion on Wednesday.

Syria: A woman killed, 8 civilians injured in terrorist blast in Homs

Terrorists blew up an explosive device in Homs city on Wednesday, killing a woman and injuring 8 other civilians.

A Police Command source said that the explosive device was attached to a minibus and went off in al-Hadara Street in Homs city, leaving 9 people injured.

The source noted that one of the injured is in critical condition.

Later, a source at Zaim Hospital said a woman dies of her injuries after one hour of raaching the hospital.

Yesterday, a terrorist car bomb attack in al-Zahraa neighborhood in the city killed a civilian and left 12 others injured.

ISIS executes Syrian girl because of “WhatsApp”

ISIS has executed a 22-year-old girl in the town of Khacham in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour, after her arrest for two months, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Syrian Observatory reported that ISIS elements raided the home of the girl, claiming that they had found a conversation via the application “WhatsApp” on her mobile phone.

The conversation was with her brother and another relative, belonging to Osod al-Sharqiya Army in Kalamoon.

The report added that ISIS had executed during the past 14 months at least 95 women on several charges.

Dearborn Shia scholars ‘Sayed al-Qazwini’ plans new mosque to educate about Islam

Ahlul Bayt News Agency – It was close to midnight inside a community center in Dearborn as the religious leader spoke to a crowd of hundreds, many sitting on the floor because of the overflow crowd.

“We have to speak for Islam,” Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini implored the Muslim audience at the Bint Jbeil Cultural Center. “Because if you don’t speak for your religion … ISIS will speak for your religion,” he said, using another name for the Islamic State. “The extremists will speak for your religion.”

Al-Qazwini’s speech during a Ramadan lecture this summer in Dearborn showed that he still has a large following despite being pushed out of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, a prominent mosque that he led for 17 years. In an interview with the Free Press, Al-Qazwini, 51, talked about his plans to open a mosque called the Islamic Institute of America and an accompanying group, Muslim Youth Connection. He has met with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to talk about his new center and was with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and other Muslim leaders at the State Department’s annual Eid dinner.

After a tumultuous year that saw one of North America’s most prominent Shia mosques split into two camps, Al-Qazwini is forging ahead, not only with plans for a new mosque, but with possible future projects that include a satellite TV station, Islamic college, health care clinic and Islamic nursing home.

“Our new mosque will not be just a traditional mosque where people go and pray,” Al-Qazwini said in his Canton home. “Rather, I hope it is going to be a community center where we can focus on more than one aspect. … My main priority now is the youth … I would like to see that the youth are empowered and assuming a leadership role in the Muslim community. Traditionally, in most mosques in Dearborn, there is no youth presence.”

While the Islamic Center’s membership was primarily Lebanese Shia, the new center is “not going to be ethnically based, nor sectarian based,” Al-Qazwini added. “It’s going to be appealing to all Muslims, Sunni and Shia … and all Muslims as far as their ethnicities and races.”

Al-Qazwini also hopes to open a media center and continue the interfaith work he has done, while teaching a new generation. His plans reflect how Muslim leaders in the U.S. are trying to balance fighting extremism with maintaining their faith.

“If we, the moderate Muslims, do not reach out to our youth, we are going to run one of the two risks,” Al-Qazwini said. “Either those youth will be… assimilated in the big society where they will not be able to identify with Islam anymore. … The other risk that we may run into if we do not reach out to our youth is the radicalization. More and more Muslim youth are joining ISIS.”

Last month, Al-Qazwini led about 150 Muslims ages 16-30 on a retreat at Camp Taha in Columbiaville, where they discussed Islamic issues while enjoying the outdoors. And he has been outspoken in recent weeks in defending the right of Muslims to build a mosque on 15 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. He’s continuing to connect with audiences.

During the Ramadan talk in July at the center, the packed crowd listened with rapt attention, with some sitting on blankets on the floor, prepared to stay up all night.

Outside, the walls of the Lebanese-American center had been spray-painted sometime over the past 24 hours with anti-Iraqi graffiti aimed at denigrating Qazwini, who is of Iraqi descent: “The Iraqi Center of Baghdad,” read one insult. It was a symbol of the lingering tensions that remain over his forced departure from the Islamic Center.

But despite the vandalism, Al-Qazwini garnered a massive show of support that day as he talked about the importance of educating the public about Islam. That night happened to be what is called in Islam the Night of Power, when one’s prayers and good deeds are believed to be worth more than those done in 83 years.

Jabbing his finger in the air to stress his points, Al-Qazwini cited a survey in which “62% of Americans … have a negative view of our religion.”

“They think that Muslims are either terrorists or they support terrorists,” he said. “Who’s going to change that perception? You. Us. … Allah will not change any people’s conditions unless they change their own conditions. We cannot sit aside and blame the Jews, continue to blame the Zionists for our pain.”

A few minutes later, he started a bidding process to help raise money for the new mosque. It’s common during the Night of Power for congregations to raise money.

“I need 10 hands, 10 people, brothers and sisters, who would donate $10,000,” he said.

In 15 minutes, Al-Qazwini raised $129,000 for the mosque.

Divisions over money

Sitting off Ford Road, the 65,000 square-feet Islamic Center, with a golden-hued dome framed by two minarets 10 stories high, serves up to 10,000 people in metro Detroit. It’s perhaps the most well known of metro Detroit’s roughly 35 mosques, a center for Shia Islam known around the world.

It was a perfect fit for Al-Qazwini when he arrived in 1997. A native of Iraq, Al-Qazwini is a descendant of Islam’s prophet, Muhammad, coming from a long line of Shia clerics. His late grandfather was abducted by forces with Saddam Hussein’s government, never to be heard from again.

Al-Qazwini built up a huge following; his charisma and English-speaking skills won over American youths and also non-Muslims. He met and spoke with Pope Benedict XVI, U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and Barack Obama when he was running for president in 2008.

But in recent years, there were tensions with some board members, much of it over finances that spilled over into some anti-Iraqi sentiment, Al-Qazwini said. A majority of the congregation and all of its board members are of Lebanese descent. Ned Fawaz, 78, an influential board member of the mosque and the head of an energy company, wanted Al-Qazwini out and tried to convince board members to dump him.

The divisions at the 53-year-old mosque were not unlike the challenges faced by other religious congregations over the decades, such as Catholic churches and Jewish synagogues, as they grew in America. Islamic spiritual leaders in the U.S. have to deal with infighting on boards, ethnic clashes and disagreements over finances.

Some of the dispute at the Islamic Center touched upon complex issues of Islamic tithing that are often intensely debated among Muslims. Observant Shia Muslims follow a system called khoms, in which 20% of surplus income is given to help poor people. According to Shia clerics, about half of that 20% is given to a charitable project, such as an orphanage, and the other half is given to poor descendants of Islam’s prophet.

Part of the disagreement centered on where that money should go.

Al-Qazwini’s critics accused him of diverting donations to the mosque to Iraq to support a charity and hospital led by Al-Qazwini’s father, Ayatollah Sayed Mortada Al-Qazwini, through a charity in California, the Development and Relief Foundation.

But Al-Qazwini and his supporters say he was open about where the money went, which was legitimate aid to help people in need, a requirement of the tithing.

“I do not regret any decision I have made while at the Islamic Center,” Al-Qazwini said about money given to the Development and Relief Foundation and the Iraqi centers. “Some of the charity money I was entrusted by community members, who wanted me to do so by forwarding them to the orphans to Iraq. …I believe that’s a noble cause.”

“The orphanage that we are running in Iraq, it’s not a family business … it is dedicated to helping orphans and the needy.”

Al-Qazwini said that people would either specifically request the money go to the Iraqi charity, or he might recommend it, and they agreed to it.

Fawaz, of Lebanese descent, said that the money should have gone to pay off the debt of the Islamic Center, which is about $2 million, and for community projects in metro Detroit.

The donations “should not be going outside the community,” Fawaz said. “We have in the United States poor people, we have people in need, people who need scholarships, we have people who don’t have heat and electricity. According to Islam, you can’t take that money and send it outside the community if they are in need … it’s illegal in the eyes of the shari’a,” or Islamic law.

But Al-Qazwini said that during his time at the Islamic Center that he raised $5 million for the center.

“I did what I did for God, to please God, and the community,” he said. “When I raised money for the Islamic Center, I wasn’t doing it to please the board members. Rather I did it out of my own heart. I raised this money to help an Islamic institution.”

Supporters of Al-Qazwini say that his critics didn’t mind when mosque donations were directed towards charities in Lebanon, only when they went to Iraq. They point to the anti-Iraqi graffiti at the Bint Jbeil Cultural Center as an example of the hatred that some in the Lebanese-American community exhibited towards them.

Fawaz said he and the Islamic Center of America condemned the graffiti attack and that the center is open to all.

“We still have Iraqis, they come in,” Fawaz said. “The Islamic Center is open for everybody. … We have people from Yemen, from Sudan, people from everywhere.”

After Al-Qazwini was placed on a 60-day leave in January, the two sides tried to reconcile, but ultimately couldn’t come to an agreement. The Islamic Center wanted Al-Qazwini to sign a contract specifying how long he would be the imam, reduce his authority and add at least two more imams to the center.

Al-Qazwini refused what he felt were restrictive terms for someone who had served for so long. He left in late May.

Now, the Islamic Center is hiring three to five imams and has a new board chair. It is also hoping to expand the center with an auditorium, grow the adjacent Islamic school and establish an Islamic funeral service, said Fawaz.

Al-Qazwini’s supporters say attendance has plummeted at the Islamic Center, which Fawaz said is not true. He said attendance at the annual fund-raiser doubled.

For now, Al-Qazwini lectures on most Fridays at the previous building of the Islamic Center of America, in Detroit, now called Az-Zahara Center.

“Honestly, I wish the Islamic Center all the best,” Al-Qazwini said. “Whatever happened personally on my end, I consider that’s part of the past. And I’m moving forward.”

Supporters leave center

When Sarah Alsaden, 24, of Dearborn heard that Al-Qazwini was forced out of the Islamic Center, “it was very upsetting,” she said. “It felt like a betrayal.”

Like many others, she left the Islamic Center after Al-Qazwini did.

“I would probably follow the Sayed wherever he ends up going,” she said, using the honorific title given to male descendants of Islam’s prophet. “He knows how to respect us and speak the truth. He’s a voice of reason, a voice of moderate Islam.”

Al-Qazwini negotiates the line between American culture and faith, saying in a recent lecture that Muslims “should not be ashamed of seeking treatment” for depression from medical professionals: “Having depression doesn’t mean you have weak faith in Allah at all. … It’s just a chemical imbalance that needs treatment.”

At the same time, he warns against over-assimilation. Regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage, he told the Free Press: “For the first time, we heard some bizarre voices in the Muslim community supporting that recognition. …It’s a very alarming thing.”

On a Tuesday during Ramadan, Al-Qazwini was invited to a Lebanese-American home in Northville where guests gathered to pray behind him and break fast after sunset.

Over plates of fruit and Lebanese pastries, Alsaden’s father, Mohamed Alsaden, explained Al-Qazwini’s appeal.

“Without the Sayed, our kids would be have been lost,” he said. “Dearborn without Sayed Hassan Al-Qazwini, we don’t want to live in it. He dedicated his life for the sake of Islam.”
