Suicide Bomber Kills 24 in Baghdad Shiite majority neighborhood

In the past few days, in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad, there have been a spate of suicide bombings, killing nearly 100 people.

A suicide bomber killed at least 24 people and wounded 41 more on Monday in Baghdad by running his car into a police checkpoint. The checkpoint was in the eastern Kadhimiya district, a Shiite-majority neighborhood.

This is the latest in a series of bombings that have hit Baghdad in the past few days, mostly in Shiite neighborhoods. On Monday, as many Iraqi families were on the streets celebrating Eid al-Ghadeer a Shiite festival, which commemorates the Imam Ali, most sacred of Shiite martyrs, a bomb was detonated in the Mredi market in Sadr City area of Badghdad, killing three and wounding at least 21. In Habibya, which is also in Sadr City area, three more were killed by bombings. These bombs were set off when the streets were the most crowded in early evening of Monday.

On Saturday night, two car bombings killed at least 50 people and wounded scores more. A suicide bomb on the same night killed another 12 in Baghdad. Earlier, last week, 11 people were killed at a bus stop in northern Baghdad and a bomb inside of a vegetable cart exploded killing another four and injuring 18 more.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet.
