Supreme Leader Grants Clemency to Prisoners Ahead of Eid Al-Qadir

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has pardoned or commuted the sentences of more than 1200 convicts on the occasion of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Qadir.

Ayatollah Khamenei on Saturday agreed to a request by Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani to grant clemency to 1256 convicts on the auspicious occasion of Eid- al-Adha and Eid al-Qadir, the website of the Supreme Leader’s office said.

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Muslims around the world observed Eid- al-Adha last week.
Eid al-Qadir, which falls on Monday, October 13, this year, is the commemoration of a historic day in Islam.

14 centuries ago, on the 18th of month of Zi al-Hajjah, on his way back from his last Hajj pilgrimage, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) received a revelation from God, ordering him to halt the pilgrims at a pond called Qadir Khum, and to designate Ali ibn Abi-Taleb (AS) as his successor in guiding and ruling Muslims.
This day is also celebrated by many Muslims around the world.

Under Article 110 of Iran’s Constitution, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution has, upon a request by the judiciary chief and within Islamic rules, the right to grant clemency to convicts.
